Mattress Size and Dimensions Guide

Mattress Size and Dimensions Guide

Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King

Choosing the right-sized mattress should be one of the first decisions you make before making a purchase.

Size is an individual preference, so understanding the features and additional details for each choice will be vital when figuring out what is the right fit for you.

Provided below is a comprehensive mattress size breakdown that will hopefully answer any questions you may have when deciding what bed to buy.

Twin

Twin Size Mattress Dimensions: 38” x 75”

Twin Twin Size Mattress Dimensions: 38" x 75"

Twin mattresses are one of the most popular sizes for children who are too big to fit in a baby bed and too small to justify a full-sized bed - even more popularly used in bunk beds.

They are also quite common with single sleepers who are smaller in size, guest rooms, and in college dorm rooms. Because of its convenient size, it is often used in houses and rooms that have limited space to spare - like studio apartments.

Twin mattress dimensions feature 75 inches of length, making it suitable for average to below-average height adults. To be able to adequately fit a twin bed, you should be working with a minimum of 7 x 10 feet of space in a room.

Twin XL

Twin XL Size Mattress Dimensions: 38” x 80”

Twin XL Size Mattress Dimensions: 38" x 80"

Twin XL mattresses are exactly the same as twin beds, except they are exactly 5 inches longer, making it a more suitable choice for taller individuals who sleep alone.

They are even used in guest bedrooms as a king mattress by putting two different twin XL beds together. It is even more suitable for college life than regular twin beds are, as the extra length goes a long way (pun intended) for increasing legroom.

It is recommended that you have a minimum of 7.5 x 10 feet of space in your room to be able to comfortably fit a twin XL.

Full

Full-Size Mattress Dimensions: 54” x 75”

Full Size Mattress Dimensions: 54" x 75"

You may be curious as to why we don’t refer to our full-size mattresses as “double” beds - a common practice in the mattress industry. While the term double infers that the bed is double the width of a conventional twin bed, it is in fact only 15 inches wider.

Full beds are ideal for single sleepers who are looking for a little more space to stretch out in their bed compared to what they would be getting on a twin.

It is also a viable choice for guest rooms, children/teenagers who do not have enough room for a queen bed, and couples who are ok with 27 inches of width each (involuntary snuggling inevitable).

Queen

Queen-Size Mattress Dimensions: 60" x 80”

Queen Size Mattress Dimensions: 60" x 80"

Queen mattresses are the most popular mattress size sold in Canada - an accolade that can be attributed to several different factors.

They are the standard for couples as the 60 inches of width provide sufficient space for each of the sleepers to be comfortable; it should also be noted that the length should not be an issue even for taller individuals as it is a standard 80 inches long.

It is also a favourite for single adults who prefer to stretch out and for those who may be naturally inclined to move about while they sleep. Queen size mattress dimensions are often too large for rooms that are less than 10 x 10 feet in size, so it is recommended that you accurately measure your room if you think you are cutting things close.

King

King-Size Mattress Dimensions: 76" x 80”

King Size Mattress Dimensions: 76" x 80"

Upgrading from a queen to a king bed will get you an extra 16 inches of width, meaning couples can expect to have plenty of space to sprawl out and relax - you would even have room for a pet to join you!

King size mattress dimensions are deceivingly large, and there have been many reported cases of individuals buying a bed without measuring their room only to return it later because it was unable to fit.

King size beds are usually reserved for a spacious master bedroom - it is recommended that you have a room with a minimum of 10 x 12 feet in size.

California King

California King-Size Dimensions: 72" x 84”

California King Size Dimensions: 72" x 84"

California King size mattresses are quite similar in size to the standard king, with the only differences being 4 inches less width and 4 inches more length.

It still provides the perfect conditions for a couple that requires more space than a queen bed has to offer, and in addition, it offers more comfort for a taller sleeper who needs a few extra inches to the length.

California King dimensions are the longest in the market, meaning that a minimum of 10 x 12.5 is recommended as any smaller may cause your room to feel cramped and overcrowded.

Three Key Questions

When picking a mattress size, you should use the information above to ask yourself some key questions:

  • What size best fits your room? It is advised that you measure the dimensions of your room in order to figure out what is the largest bed that can be accommodated before space begins to feel overly cramped.
  • Who is sleeping in the bed? Certain bed sizes are suitable for certain people – whether it be based on your age, height, or relationship status.
  • What is your budget? The price range from Twin to Cal King can sometimes be a 100% increase. Without a doubt, this could very well be an important factor when making a purchase.
